We loved working with this couple. They had such a wonderful day! They also had a great planner to help keep everything on track.
Katie and Hunter chose to use us for most of the day with two photographers. This allowed us enough time to capture details, getting ready, ceremony, portraits and their special events without rushing through the day.
We started the day out with the pre-ceremony shots. I was able to work with the bride, her attendants and family. We were not only able to capture getting ready photos but we were also able to get some of the family portraits done before the ceremony as well as bridal party portraits. I was able to capture Katie with her family and bridesmaids while Doug worked with the groom, his family and groomsmen. This allowed the bride and groom to get to their reception faster after the ceremony, combined family portraits and romantic portraits were finished.

Katie and Hunter got to say their I do’s in front of their closest friends and family on the beaches of the Outer Banks in Corolla, NC. The ceremony was beautiful! They decided to keep their ceremony simple and reserve a few minutes afterward for themselves to spend time together in their first moments as husband and wife. A table with congratulatory drinks was set aside for them in the gazebo with champagne to celebrate. Shortly after their time together we were able to gather everyone for a group photo and then finish up with the rest of the family and bridal party portraits, so that we could focus on the couples intimate session.

Katie & Hunter were so fun to photograph. You can see the love they have for each other in every photo. They were so expressive. I was so happy to know that we would be spending another day together shooting a trash-the-dress session. I will have those photos in another post.

While I was working hard on the beach, Doug was working hard to capture the details of the reception and the cocktail hour. He was able to keep himself out of site and capture the guests making memories and the details. This allows the guests to enjoy themselves without feeling like they have to perform for the camera.
The bride and groom joined everyone for cocktail hour for a little bit before the reception started.

The bride and groom focused on their time with family during the reception. They were able to keep their reception moving at a good pace with the help of the day of planner Heather from Premiere Events.
The reception was started off with dinner. While everyone was finishing up dinner the toasts began. I always love this approach as everyone is still in their seats and you don’t have to disrupt the party to get the events started. Shortly after the toasts the desert bar and cake cutting took place. It is so fun when the couple is playful! The final events of the evening ended with the dances and then to an open dance floor. Each dance was so emotional and thoughtful. It was truly a memory filled day.

Don’t forget to check out our trash-the-dress session with this lovely couple in our next blog post. Coming soon!

We are so excited to be working with Bo & Kayla for their beautiful spring wedding in Ocracoke in 2017. We had a great time working with them on their engagement photos and are so excited for the wedding day! The engagement session day was perfect! Such a gorgeous day especially after the week was surrounded with days of bad weather.  I had no idea what I was in store for that day. I was nervous and excited. I met Bo at the dock at Oregon Inlet. We loaded up my equipment and he took me on a beautiful boat ride to a private island where we met up with Kayla, her mom, and the cutest and sweetest dog ever, Sprig! Getting to the island was exciting. It was beautiful. I couldn’t wait to go explore.

I loved how well Bo and Kayla connected on camera and off. They are such an amazing couple.  They were so fun to work with and are such great people! I am so honored to be a part of their wedding day! We were able to use many parts of the island for the session and it was GORGEOUS! I asked Kayla and Bo a little bit about themselves, their engagement, and their upcoming wedding. Look below for their big day plans!

Kayla is from Nags Head and works as a senior office support specialist for the Adult Services Unit at Dare County Social Services.
Kayla grew up around the water. It was beach days as a child and then when she turned fifteen she began in-shore charter fishing with her father and did that for eight years. Kayla attended East Carolina University where she graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health Administration and a minor in Business Administration. Kayla enjoys anything that involves being on a boat or sitting by a pool.

Bo is from Manteo and works in construction for HOM Land Development. Bo also grew up around the water. He can drive a boat better than he can drive a vehicle. Bo takes fishing and hunting very seriously and it is a large part of his life. In the summer he is always chasing a fish. Be it drum, cobia or flounder–nothing is safe. In the winter he is always chasing a duck. He takes his yearly trip to Canada in the fall and then gears up for a long winter of finding anything that flies. He is open for any excuse to be outdoors and an even better excuse to skip out on work.
Kayla and Bo love spending time together. They don’t take life too seriously and they love to have fun!

A mutual friend introduced Kayla and Bo in Greenville, North Carolina while in college. They dated on and off for about two years in college before finally going their separate ways. In 2012 they found their way back to each other. Four years later Bo proposed!
Kayla and Bo got engaged on March 11, 2016. Bo bought the ring and proposed all the same day. He was a nervous wreck after purchasing the ring. He had a plan to take Kayla to a sand island and popping the question there but his nerves got the best of him. Kayla came home early that Friday afternoon and he was waiting on one knee when she walked in the door. The funny thing is that he did not even think about changing out of his work clothes. So Bo proposed to Kayla in a dirty white tee shirt, green shorts and camouflage ankle boots. It makes the proposal story that much better!

Bo & Kayla’s wedding will take place in the spring in Ocracoke. Kayla and Bo have both  always loved Ocracoke and it is such a unique place so it was obvious that that is where we wanted to have it. They decided on Berkley Manor as the venue because it has a classic feel that they want for the wedding. It is an old duck hunting lodge that has been renovated. The colors for our wedding are going to be gold and blush. Kayla has always loved that color combination. The decor is going to be simple and classic because they do not want anything too over the top. The ceremony will be on a dock on Silver Lake and the reception will take place under tent in the yard of Berkley Manor.  Kayla loves the classic look of baby’s breath for the flowers and the fact that it is not a formal looking flower. As for the bridal party? We know they sweet dog Sprig will be the pet of honor in the wedding.

Amanda & Nick were married in April on Hatteras Island on a beautiful stretch of beach in front of Jekyll’s Hideout. The house is amazing with huge decks, gorgeous views, a lot of room and a nice yard for a reception. It was a close call with the weather that week but everything turned out perfectly.  We always tell our couples not to worry about the weather until just a couple of days before the wedding. The weather is always changing on the Outer Banks.

We started the day with Doug photographing the groomsmen getting ready and some portraits and I photographed the bride getting ready and a portrait session with the bridesmaids. We had a wonderful first look before the ceremony to help take away some of the stress from the busy day. After the ceremony we had a wonderful portrait session. It is always important to make your photographer a family portrait list. Not everyone’s family dynamics are the same. This will help everything to move quickly. Talk to your photographer to find out how to best organize your list. Also, be careful how many pictures you ask for. Portraits take time. Make sure you allot your time wisely. A long list can make for a long day.

After a super romantic portrait session with the couple the bride bustled her dress on the beach and the bridal party was announced into the reception. It was a wonderful reception filled with romantic dances, toasts, fun, family and friends. I am so glad and blessed to be an Outer Banks Photographer. I get to meet so many wonderful couples and their amazing friends!

Enjoy the photos!

It was the perfect day. We started our day with a first look of the bride and groom on the docks by the salon. Stephen got to see his stunning bride before the big day went into full swing. As I took pictures of the bride and groom with their bridal party and some romantic pictures on the dock Doug was able to get some beautiful images of the reception and ceremony site. It is always good to make sure that everything is already set up before your photographer arrives. This is so important if you want pictures of the room as well as the tables and details. It is also important that the ceremony site be set up  before guests start arriving if want to make sure your photographer gets this important shot.
After the portraits the bridal party freshens up while we headed to the ceremony site to get pictures of the guests arriving. After the ceremony we headed to the beach for family photos and a few more bridal party and romantic shots while Doug photographed the cocktail hour details and guests. After our session on the beach we walked over to a little dock to the south of the Sanderling where our couple and bridal party boarded a boat to get to the gazebo on the sound side. It allowed the bride and groom to enter from the sound side into the pavilion for their introductions. The rest of the night was topped off with great food, fun and a lot of dancing!

Our bride shared some information about their special day. See what she wrote.

I am from Pittsburgh, PA and Stephen is from Topsail Island, NC.  We are currently living in Alexandria, Va.
Stephen works for PEPCO Electrical Company and I work for the federal government.
We met at a local establishment in San Francisco where we used to live.  Stephen asked me to marry him on top of the Marin Headlands overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge near where we lived.  It is a beautiful view of the city.
We chose the Outer Banks for our wedding because Stephen is from North Carolina and loves the beach and I visited the Outer Banks a few years back and really enjoyed it there.
Our colors were tan, violet, mint, and yellow. I got my dress at a small dress boutique in Walnut Creek, CA.
My favorite part of the day was seeing how happy my parents were and spending time with friends and family.
It was easy to plan a destination wedding.  The hardest part was the hotel and sleep accommodations for guests.  Destination weddings can get very pricey and you typically need to book rooms in advance which most people don’t like to do.
The best part of a destination wedding is that I got to be at the beach for an entire week.  The wedding goes by so fast, so it was great to get a beach house with my bridesmaids and spend time with them before and after the wedding.
I also took pictures with the bridal party and had a “first look” before the wedding which I liked because it helped move things along between the wedding and reception.  Our dinner service was served early which I also think is important because it allows more time for dancing.  It was also very convenient that you could just walk from the ceremony to the reception.
I wouldn’t have changed anything about our wedding day.
Dana & Stephen
